Asia-Pacific zoos in the 21st century : stakeholder perceptions of the roles and functions of zoos : a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Management at Massey University, New Zealand
The advent of the anthropocene accentuates the transformation of ecosystems on a
global scale. This study responds to these concerns by assessing the role and function of
21st century zoos in general and the Asia-Pacific zoos in particular. The lack of
information on key zoo stakeholders (visitors, staff members, corporate sponsors and
zoo associates) is significant in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in Asia, where there
are complexities that may stem from cultural and societal differences. Furthermore,
current literature is predominantly based upon Western research and case studies, which
rarely take into account the complexities and differences of Asia. This research
considers the diversity of the Asia-Pacific region by examining the perceptions and
attitudes of the four groups of key stakeholders.
Zoos in six countries across the Asia-Pacific were visited over a period of six months to
March 2013 in order to assess the diversity of the study region. A literature survey and
meta-analysis of 138 zoo-based publications was employed to create a matrix table of
themes, stakeholders, and research outcomes. These results were used to design survey
instruments directed at stakeholder groups as well as provide a framework against
which the results of this study can be compared and contrasted. Quantitative analysis
such as Principal Component Analysis, Spearman’s Rho and Kruskal-Wallis H test
were used to analyse the results. The face-to-face and computer-based instruments were
augmented with the use of a reflective diary and personal work experience to triangulate
and validate the research results.
The results show that individual zoos across the world are facing similar challenges.
Differences in educational backgrounds and socio-cultural norms within the Asia-
Pacific region are reflected in stakeholders’ experiences, perceptions, and evaluations of
zoos. The results show that there are many differences amongst Asia-Pacific zoo
practices, visitor satisfaction, and stakeholder participation and these differences would
make it extremely difficult to coordinate activities at a regional level to give them a
single voice with a single agenda
Introduction: Internet use increases the possibilities of performing intimate partner
violence among young people. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyse
prevalence of violence among young couples on the Internet by examining gender
differences. Method: The sample included 109 young people (44 males, 65 females)
whose average age was 22.86 years (sd=2.859), with no significant gender differ-
ences in age, sexual orientation and level of education. Participants confidentially
and voluntarily completed the Cyber Dating Abuse Questionnaire (Borrajo et al.,
2015). Results: Of the sample, 56.5% reported the monitoring status updates on their
partners’ social networks, and 40% stated that their partners used new technologies
to know where they were and who they were with. No significant gender differences
were found. According to the Student’s t-test (t= 2.696, p≤ .008), significant differ-
ences are observed for males related to posting content to insult and/or humiliate
their partners. Moreover, 4.5% of males/females reported that they exerted some
form of abuse on their partners, with no significant gender differences. Conclusion:
These findings indicate behaviours among young people that encourage exposure
and performing partner violence. In particular, the control element prevails in using
new technologies. Both genders reported exerting abuse on partners. These data
support studies that describe violence in young couples as a bidirectional phenome-
non

Introduction: Bisexuality is a sexual orientation characterised by a sexual, emotional
and/or romantic attraction to people of different gender. The rejection of these people is
called biphobia. This leads to several prejudices and, besides being discriminated by
straight people, people can even be discriminated against homosexual people. This behaviour
is known as “double discrimination”. Despite much having been achieved regarding
the acceptance of sexual diversity, negative attitudes are still shown towards people
with sexual orientations that differ from the heterosexual one. Therefore, this study aims
to analyse attitudes towards bisexuality in university students. Method: The sample was
composed of 325 university students, 145 males and 180 females aged 18-25 years
(M=20.05; SD±1.89). Two questionnaires were used, one with socio-demographic data
and the other was a 5-item Likert scale about biphobia. The questionnaire was developed
ad hoc by the Unisexsida team. Results: We found different degrees of negative attitudes
towards bisexuality; e.g., 32% of the participants somewhat or strongly agreed with the
statement “bisexuals are depraved”. When comparing the results by gender, males obtained
higher measures than females for most scale items, but differences were not significant.
Conclusions: We can still generally find certain levels of negative attitudes towards
bisexuality, although the percentage we found may be lower than in the general
population because participants were young university students
Introduction: The myths of romantic love describe stereotypical ways of feeling and acting in affective-sexual relations. Researches show a relation between a higher score for romanticism and a minor use of condoms and other contraception methods. Studying how those myths affect the individual’s sexual behaviour is needed, in order to create an effective prevention. Method: 654 young people were evaluated by the Myths of Romantic Love Questionnaire (Ferrer y cols., 2010). These participants were divided into two groups: RG-Risk Group (they do not use a condom systematically) and NRGNo Risk Group (they always use a condom). Results: The differential analyses revealed that young people who are involved in risky sexual behaviours show concordance for most of the myths of romantic love; the myth of intense passion (p=0,006) and the justification of violence (p=0,049) reveal statistical significant differences. Conclusion:Young people show distorted believes of love and partner, which affects their first relationships. Those myths and the ones related to a vision of emotions, may facilitate risky factors in sexual development and health. There are differences between a group that practices unprotected sex and the one that practices safe sex. Including these results into the sexual health programmes is required
Stevia vs. Sucrose: Influence on the phytochemical content of a citrus–maqui beverage—A shelf life stud
The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has been related with the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other pathophysiological situations, such as obesity or diabetes mellitus. Given the increasing awareness on this fact, food industries are developing new products to reduce the amount of added sugar in development of food products development. Accordingly, in the present work, new functional beverages, constituting a dietary source of bioactive phenolics and supplemented with stevia or sucrose, were designed in order to study the influence of the sweetener during processing and shelf-life. This study is of critical for the informed selection of the sweetener based on its e_ect on the final phytochemical profile of beverages, especially taking into consideration that there are no previous studies on Stevia rebaudiana. Physicochemical features and phytochemical composition, as well as stability of the di_erent beverages concerning these parameters, were evaluated for 90 days during storage under di_erent conditions (refrigeration (4 _C) and room temperatura (25 _C) under light or darkness conditions). Physicochemical parameters (pH, titratable acidity, total soluble solids, and color) did not display statistically significant di_erences between beverages. Storage temperature was the greatest determinant a_ecting the stability of all the analyzed bioactive compounds (vitamin C, anthocyanins, and flavanones). The main di_erence between sweeteners was observed in flavanones, which exhibited a higher loss during storage under day light conditions when stevia was added instead of sucrose. In addition, the juices’ colors were rather stable, keeping a reddish coloration and natural appearance throughout the shelf life. Hence, stevia could be considered as an alternative sweetener by the beverage industry. This work was funded by the Spanish MINECO through Research Project AGL2016-75332-C2-1-R (AEI/FEDER, UE).
Introduction. The AIDS/HIV epidemic remains a major problem of Public Health in which
men and women are exposed unequally. However, preventive behavioral interventions
have rarely considered these differences; consequently, these have diminished their
potential effectiveness. For this reason, this study examines the existence of a differential
response between men and women for variables associated with risk infection, after
taking part in hiv-aids preventive strategies.
Method. 122 college students (18-24 years old; 45 % men and 55 % women), participated
in a inter-group comparison design. Young participants took part in several interventions
based on socio-cognitive models and full-filled, previous and afterwards (posttest,
1st follow-up, 2nd follow-up), the Cuestionario para la Prevención del Sida (Ballester,
Gil, Guirado and Bravo, 2004).
Results. In general, all the variables improved for men and women although only
women got better results significantly in condom’s advantages and the fear of HIV infection. On the other hand, men have improved more in safe sex than women and, at
long term, they have shown significant results in oral sex, vaginal sex and steady partner.
Conclusion. To sum up, our results support the differential impact among college students
depending on gender. In particular, behavioral variables seem to be more resistant
for women, meanwhile attitudinal variables are more difficult to change for men.
Therefore, analyzing in depth specific strategies to improve the differential resistant
variables for men and women is required
What Works Well in HIV Prevention Among Spanish Young People? An Analysis of Differential Effectiveness Among Six Intervention Techniques
The AIDS epidemic remains a concern of public health among young people and adolescents. Prevention programs have revealed diverse deficiencies to attain their main goal: preventing risky behaviors. This experimental study evaluates the differential effectiveness of six intervention techniques for preventing HIV/AIDS based on informational-motivational-behavioral Model (talk, website, attitudinal discussion, participation of a seropositive person, fear induction and role play). 239 Spanish young people took part in an experimental design to evaluate six intervention techniques and a non-intervention condition, through changes in their knowledge, attitudes and protective sex behavior. Our findings support a general effectiveness of preventive intervention techniques comparing non-intervention. In particular, the motivational techniques reveal more effectiveness for these Spanish young people. Therefore, it is required identifying a differential impact of the intervention techniques when implementing HIV behavioral interventions. This work was supported by ‘‘Foundation to HIV-AIDS Research and Prevention in Spain’’ (FIPSE) (Ref. 14.436
Introduction: Women who have sex with women (WSW) are a heterogeneous group who
have received minor attention. While they represent a considerable sector of population,
we do not know the type of sexual behaviors that they usually practice, as well as the use
of several prevention methods –in particular, latex barrier. This was the main purpose to
evaluate 40 wsw. Results: Through the application of different questionnaires, we find a
high frequency of different sexual practices (especially cunnilingus and tribadism) for both steady and casual partners. Moreover, we observe a lower frequency of latex barrier
use. Discussion: These results support the need for further research in a sector of the
population who have risk of contracting some stis or hiv. In particular, to design effective
and adjusted strategies to prevent the risk sexual activity of this group.
